Engage

1. Provide students with the Engage Activity Sheet (Spanish version).

2. Play the video below.

3. Students will decompose 20 using 2 numbers and 3 numbers. Model the process for them. For example, decompose 20 = 5 + 15, and 20 = 1 + 4 + 15. Each answer must be different and unique.

4. Use the Engage Activity Sheet to help students record their results.

5. Have students share their results with the class and add to their lists as necessary.

6. Display the Engage Answer Key (Spanish version) if desired.

Explore

1. Arrange students in groups of 4 (2 pairs of students – one pair is Team A and one pair is Team B).

2. Provide students with the Explore Activity Sheet (Spanish version), set of number tiles (Explore Activity Master – Number Tiles, Spanish version), double ten frame (Explore Activity Master – Double Ten Frame, Spanish version), and counters.

3. Play the video.

4. Follow the directions in the Explore Answer Key (Spanish version) to model the Subtracting Close to Zero game.

5. Assist students as needed as they complete the activity.

6. Answer the debriefing questions.

7. Display the Explore Answer Key if desired.

Explain

1. Obtain a Part-Part-Whole mat (Explain Activity Master, Spanish version), Explain Activity Sheet (Spanish version), and counters such as color tiles.

3. To differentiate for the struggling learner, provide students with the Mission Support Sheet (Spanish version).

4. Display the Explain Activity Answers (Spanish version) if desired.

Elaborate

1. Obtain the Elaborate Activity Sheet (Spanish version) and the Mission Support Sheet (Spanish version) if desired.

2. Play the video below. Pause as directed.

3. Facilitate as students work through the activity. If necessary, read the problems aloud.

4. Display the Elaborate Answer Key (Spanish version) if desired.

Evaluate

Procedure:

2. Use the Evaluate Answer Key (Spanish version) as necessary.

Independent Practice

After the Evaluate questions, try some Independent Practice (Spanish version).
