Our curriculum team strongly suggests taking the following actions when planning for the 2020-21 school year.
- Begin by working as a collaborative team to identify the essential content for your grade level or course for the 2020-21 school year. The school year is likely to be interrupted as COVID-19 infection rates rise and fall, so by focusing on what is truly essential, you can create a flexible, workable plan.
- Collaboratively identify the knowledge and skills from prior learning (e.g., prerequisite content) that is required to support the essential content. You can use the TEA Vertical Alignment Documents or these Prior Learning Guides to help you.
- At the beginning of each unit of instruction, use rich mathematics tasks to determine what students know about the prior learning supporting the upcoming essential content.
- Teach the prior learning content as necessary in service of the essential content that is in that unit.
*NEW* NCSM: Leadership in Mathematics Education and NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) have published a joint document, Moving Forward: Mathematics Learning in the Era of COVID-19, to provide guidance for education leaders who are making decisions about the 2020-21 school year. This guidance is intended to help leaders make decisions in a way that preserves all students’ access to high-quality mathematics teaching and learning. We suggest reading Moving Forward and considering its recommendations as you plan and proceed through the 2020-21 school year.
